What is GS1 barcode?

A standard barcode format that encodes product identity and data such as lot, dates and weight using application identifiers.

GS1 is the organisation behind the barcode standards used across the food supply chain. A GS1-128 barcode on a case can carry the product's GTIN plus data such as the lot number, pack or expiry date, net weight and country of origin, each marked by an application identifier: (01) for the GTIN, (10) for the batch or lot, (17) for the expiry date, and so on.

For a distributor, scanning a supplier's GS1 label at receiving turns a minute of typing into a scan: the lot, dates and weight come from the label instead of from the receiver's reading of it.

The APFoodz warehouse app reads supplier GS1 case labels at receiving.
